The crew flew it to Tinian in December 1944 and it was subsequently adopted by the 30th and later 49th Seabee Regiments. BIG MIKE flew 30 plus missions flying Seabee Colors but not without usual mechanical problems encountered by everyone. She had a couple of ground aborts and air aborts but basically, she was reliable. BIG MIKE "had a personality" according to John Swoboda who flew on her as a replacement crew in May 1945 .. BIG MIKE took part in the February 10, 1945 raid on the Nakajima airplane factory at Ota for which 505th was honored with a Distinguished Unit Citation. The 505TH received another Dist. Unit Citation for mining of Shimonoseki Straits in June, 1945. BIG MIKE flew 10 missions in June alone in the mining campaign. She also participated on incendiary raids against Tokyo in June. BIG MIKE took credit for 6 enemy aircraft kills , including 3 in the mission on 4/28/45 to Kokubu Airfield on Kyushu . The plane was attacked by 25 to 30 enemy aircraft and shot down 3 that day ! The plane survived the war and was salvaged at Davis-Monahan in CA in 1954. As for SSGT William K. Morris who flew as radio operator on BIG MIKE from Tinian: he received The Dist. Flying Cross, 2 DUC, Asiatic/Pacific campaign medal with 3 bronze stars, Army Good Conduct, WWII Victory Medal and the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters. Quite a record for BIG MIKE -- a BEE-29! Our Regards to the Morris Family for sharing the CAN DO story of BIG MIKE- one of our treasured BEE-29s of WWII. Click here for an outstanding collection of Tinian B-29 Nose art including BIG MIKE.
